Recyclemania Carnival a Huge Hit

Stacking recycled water bottles, taste-testing organics versus non-organics, recycled origami from Ellie Katz 2015, organic aphrodisiacs (strawberries, blood oranges, chocolate), along with recycled putt-putt, basketball, pong and bowling had 150 students plus staff thinking about sustainability at the inaugural Recylemania Carnival on Feb. 26.

The Carnival was hosted by the Office of Sustainability’s EcoReps and coordinated by Sustainability Fellows Zach Trauger 2016 and Emma Danz 2014. “They hit a home run with the organization and implementation of the carnival,” says Climate Action Manager Shannon Spencer.

Trauger enlisted many campus groups to participate, including EcoReps, Sustainability Fellows, Bonner Leaders, Tri-Sig, KDK, Sig-Rho, Omega Chi, Phi Psi, and S.T.A.R! Students participated in carnival activities to gather tickets, which were then entered in a raffle to win baskets filled with sustainability-related goodies. Participants also won UCGreen Team t-shirts, Recyclemania pens and can cozies, Office of Sustainability and UC Environmental Action water bottles, and more.

In addition to Trauger and Danz, EcoReps Katz, Connor Murphy 2016, Chinami Luppescu 2015, Sara Bajor 2015, Josh Hoffman 2016, Lauren Plyler 2016, and Brandon Adorno 2015 all worked hard to organize the event. The Office of Sustainability thanks Todd McKinney, Sarah Huang 2014, Facilities, Sodexo and Panera Bread (for the bread donations organized by Lupescu) for a great event.

EcoReps are active on campus and are accepting applications for new members. Their upcoming events include Recyclemania (through March), Earth Day in April, and the OS’s Sustainable Move-Out at the end of the year. Interested in learning more?
